On May 8th in our Concept 32 / Closet & Storage Concepts showroom, we welcomed a full house of interior designers, architects, and builders for an informative and hands-on Lunch & Learn focused on one thing: understanding cabinet construction, materials used and those specific to the Colorado climate.

Attendees got a hands-on look at cabinet materials, construction techniques employed by us, and the why behind the what, making this more than just a presentation. Samples of engineered sheet goods and solid woods were passed around and open discussion around these was fostered by our excellent presenters. Our guests did not hesitate to ask plenty of questions about materials, finishes, and benefits of some sheet goods over others. The discussion around wood products was very lively and was certainly a highlight.
Here’s what we covered:
European Cabinet Construction with Isaiah (Concept 32) Isaiah kicked things off with a deep dive into how cabinet boxes are built and our approach to construction: frameless versus face frame. He showed how material choice impacts durability, performance, and aesthetics. He noted how our premium dovetail birch drawer boxes are the standard for Concept 32 and CSC Colorado. Standing between our showroom kitchen and reach-in closet, Isaiah could point to the differences in design and construction.
Engineered Material Knowledge with Steve (National Wood) Next, Steve demystified surface options by breaking down the differences between engineered sheets goods including veneer, melamine, and high-end prefinished products like Rehau, FENIX and others. His hands-on examples made it easy to identify differences in low-end products compared to the quality material core and finishes he supplies. He and Al Harrison from States Industries also shared how material decisions affect cost, durability, and sustainability and noted that Concept 32 was one of the pioneers for the use and adoption of these materials in Colorado.
The Beauty of Solid Wood with Mark (CAL DOOR) Mark wrapped the speaker series with insights into wood door styles, painted finishes, and care best practices. He showcased door profiles that aren’t possible with sheet goods and explained how certain species of wood are preferred in our region over others due to the weather and altitude. He passed around species and treatments that were beautiful and leading the current trend in real wood doors. Both Mark and Steve touched on wood cuts (like rotary vs plain sliced) and how these materials will appear different based on the cut.
Key Takeaways: whether you’re designing a high-end kitchen, a custom closet, or a full-home remodel, confidently guiding your clients through cabinet material decisions is a game-changer. This session gave attendees the tools, information, and language to do just that.
